Instructor Bio

Inspired by her brothers who had begun training a few months prior, Leah Terpstra commenced her martial arts journey in 2014 at the age of seven. From the outset, her ardent passion for the art was evident. Her innate talent, coupled with her unwavering dedication to learning, has propelled her to become an exemplary figure for aspiring martial artists.

Whether engaged in collaborative training sessions with fellow students, esteemed instructors, or simply interacting with the families who observe their loved ones’ progress, Ms. Terpstra consistently demonstrates exceptional interpersonal skills. She fosters a sense of inclusivity and belonging among all individuals, ensuring that everyone feels valued and integrated into the Kenpo community.

In 2017, Ms. Terpstra was promoted to the rank of 1st Degree Junior Black Belt at the age of nine. She continued to diligently work and train, earning her 4th Degree Junior Black Belt by the age of twelve.

In 2018, Ms. Terpstra commenced participating in the Leadership program and providing support to instructors in their respective classes.


In 2021 Ms. Terpstra transitioned her studies from the Junior Kenpo program to the Senior Kenpo program and has continued to excel.  Along with this transition, she also shifted from the Leadership program to the Instructor Training Program.

Recognizing her exceptional skill and control, she was invited to advanced sparring classes. In these classes, Leah continues to hone her boxing, kickboxing, and even explores the realm of Jiu-jitsu and MMA. She has the privilege of learning from a pool of remarkable instructors and martial artists. This exposure has propelled her skills to new heights, enabling her to refine her form, enhance her strength, and sharpen her target recognition abilities.

Ms. Terpstra has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership and achievement, culminating in the attainment of her 1st degree senior black belt in 2022. Her dedication and perseverance led to the subsequent recognition of her 2nd degree black belt in 2024.


The American Institute of Kenpo has had the privilege of witnessing the remarkable transformation of this young woman into a formidable martial artist. We are honored to have her as an active member of our Kenpo community. We are confident that any student who has the opportunity to train with her will gain a profound appreciation for her expertise and dedication.
